OTAM Mix 27: Vera - ‘Live @ Harry Klein’

In anticipation of the latest Redevice installment, with its frolicsome title ’Redevice invites their bitches’, the Out There A  Minute blog had a tête-à-tête with Frankfurt’s finest purveyor of unique deep house tracks, with a touch of Detroit: Vera Heindel.

Normally never pretentious, but almost reserved, our interview shows a more dexterous and fresh side of her, which we can not help but love. Same goes for the exclusive mix she provided, recorded live at the infamous Harry Klein club.
Enjoy, you lucky bitches!

Growing up with classical  music, hip-hop and house, can you tell us which artists have influenced you the most and why?

When I went to see Sven Väth spinning for the first time, in 1993, I said something to him and he kissed me!
Could there be a more influential occurence than that?
Same with Ricardo - one hug and BOOM… fell for him too. Or Mozart.
He once kissed me in my dreams.
Ever since I can’t stop listening to his music.

Being one half of the duo Mara Trax together with Mayaan Nidam [Ms Fitz], what’s the difference in approach when you play solo and when you spin with Maayan?

Well, you know that when I play alone, it’s usually super boring.
People started complaining and so I thought why not find another boring DJ so at least we could both be boring.
It turned out to be a very smart move. And it worked.
It took the edge off and now I feel much more relaxed when I play.
Plus it lead to a complete new approach to djing: stop worrying about the music, just try to spot the cute guys on the dancefloor.
Two girls spinning together always get a lot of attention, so we took advantage of it.
We spent all our fee in expensive, sexy clothes and make-up and started flirting shamelessly.

Your touring schedule seems to fill up nicely these days. Which clubs in your 5 years touring the globe have impressed you the most when it comes to atmosphere & sound?

Who cares about sound and atmosphere when you can have private jets and 5***** Hotels with 24h room service.
I think good sound systems and good crowds are simply overrated.
I do like the sound at Robert Johnson and Fabric though.
Okay, Warehouse 702 in Tokyo was also really nice.
Blkmarket New York and the infamous Kave in Ibiza too.
But of course nothing to compare with the exclusive afterpartys we’re having over the clouds, with the especially installed ‘iJet’ soundsystem.)

Can you tell us a bit about the mix you provided us?

The only thing you should know about this mix is that Peter Fleming, the manager of Harry Klein in Munich, is propabely going to kill me for giving it to you.
He will most likely send his bullies out to get me. So we better watch out if there are any suspiciously looking people around when we play at Studio 80.

What future plans and projects should we absolutely positively know about?

Oh, just the usual. A new tour manager for my next world tour and a new studio in a New York penthouse. Or maybe better Tokyo. We’ll see what my management suggests.

OTAM Mix 26: Frodo - ‘Set The Spirits Free’

No track indexing, no track list, and a raw house sound — few other DJs could get away with this and not get called out, yet Frodo’s selection skills and unmatched knack for making historic and contemporary connections make up for his refusal to provide the trimmings.
This is the usual high standard fare — difficult-to-identify Detroit and Chicago cuts interspersed with underground classics and modern house, featuring Rick Wilhite, Omar S, Soulphiction and LoSoul. And then some. Enjoy.
